Major applications of Inconel 600 in industrial areas

phosphoric acid plants

The Inconel 600 is an alloy that combines nickel and chromium and used for a vast range of applications that require resistance to high temperature and corrosion. It is designed for service temperatures from cryogenic to high temperatures in the range of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. It comprises exceptional mechanical properties and comes with a good amount of weldability in a vast range of temperature. The nickel content in alloy 600 allows it to resistance in reducing conditions and to corrosion by a number of inorganic and organic compounds. It also demonstrates chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking along with resistance to the alkaline solutions.

The following are a few characteristics of Inconel 600.

  • Resistant to a vast range of corrosive media.
  • It is non-magnetic and comprises exceptional mechanical properties.
  • It is immune to chorine ion stress corrosion cracking.
  • It shows high strength and good amount of weldability in high temperatures.

Corrosion resistance of Inconel 600

Due to the high corrosion resistance of Inconel 600, it is used in a number of industries. Furthermore, the inclusion of chromium makes the alloy highly resistant to the oxidizing conditions whether it is corrosive solutions or high temperatures. Apart from this, the addition of chromium also makes the material resistant to sulfuric compounds. The material has high content of nickel that contributes to its resistance to the reducing environments along with alkaline solutions.

Due to the high nickel content of this alloy,  it is highly immune to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking although there are some conditions that still result in stress corrosion cracking such as high temperature, the high strength caustic alkalies, but adequate treatment for stress corrosion cracking when applied prior can help in controlling the problems.

In addition to this, stress corrosion cracking can occur in situations due to the presence of mercury at higher temperatures and the best solution is to carry out stress relief procedure. Therefore, the design engineers must select the material wisely and expose the material to proper temperature to ensure that the end application is appropriate.

High temperature uses

Considering the versatility of the alloy, the Inconel 600 alloy also finds applications in high heat applications such bas the furnace and the heat treating fields for retorts, muffles, wire belts, and the roller hearths. Additionally, the alloy also shows good performance in several situations due to its ability to resist oxidation and to all those elements present in the furnace atmosphere.

Nuclear field

This is another field or industry where performance and solidarity play a significant role. In fact, it is now used as one of the basic materials that are widely used in the water system of the reactors. When the material is used for manufacturing in the nuclear reactor, it must be produced according to the exact specifications.

The alloy also finds use in the chemical industry in the evaporator tubes, tube sheets, bubble towers and varied other purposes. When the technical specifications of the alloy is considered properly, it results in a suitable choice of material that meets the requirements of the industries appropriately although the versatility of alloy 600 makes it highly adaptable for varied uses.
